My friend Michal Rok is one of the smartest people I know. He's been building powerapps from about the time they were launched. In April 2018 Michal told me PowerApps is pretty easy to build apps, and he can teach me in a couple of hours. I didnt really believe him, as I thought he is just a mad genius.

Now Michal has built a PowerApp to teach people like how to build an app. He’s got a video to point you in the right direction here - http://aka.ms/patapp

I tested it out over the weekend, and kept marveling over his genius idea of building an app to train people on building apps. Inception.

You can try out this app by creating a new app from web.powerapps.com and selecting the PowerApps Training template.

Give it a shot!
Microsoft is looking at replicating that success by offering the ERP and CRM together in a new cloud offering. Microsoft Dynamics 365 is essentially a piece of software that aims to unify both current CRM and ERP cloud solutions into one cloud service with new purpose-built apps to help manage specific business functions such as financials, sales, operations and customer service.

The technology will integrate with Office 365 to connect the ‘structured workflow’ of business apps with the ‘unstructured workflow’ of collaboration and productivity. It also has deep connections with the cloud office suite, as well as to Cortana voice intelligence and PowerBI data visualization — all of it built on a common platform and data model[1].

Dynamics 365 apps will also provide you with a modern and familiar experience with built in insights, intelligence and workflow. To ensure interoperability and extensibility they also use a common data model and consistent application platform. The combination of these things gives customers a comprehensive solution for business process innovation that lets them:

Start with what they need by offering apps that fit roles, industries, businesses – and grow at their pace to run their entire business in the cloud.

Enable greater productivity where they need it by connecting structured workflow of business applications (Dynamics 365) and processes with the unstructured work of collaboration and productivity (Office 365) so employees are empowered with productivity tools surfaced in the context of their business processes, and vice versa.

Gain built-in, actionable, intelligence with business applications that infuse big data, advanced analytics and IoT into processes which proactively guide employees and customers to optimal outcomes. With Dynamics 365, data and insights are transformed into intelligent action right where it’s needed, and without requiring an army of rocket scientists to make it happen.

Be ready for growth through nimble, adaptable applications, that allow them to compose, modify and extend processes in real-time. Power BI, PowerApps and Microsoft Flow empower business users to change and adapt their processes without requiring IT support. And organizations can reimagine their business model with a consistent, flexible, extensible platform[2].

In addition to unveiling Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft has also introduced its Microsoft AppSource, which will have 200 business SaaS apps, content packs, and add-ins from Microsoft and its partners that will work with its Dynamics 365. AppSource is targeted to government agencies, financial institutions, and consumer packaged-goods companies.

Microsoft did not disclose pricing for Microsoft Dynamics 365, so it remains to be seen whether it will be a combination of its Dynamics CRM pricing and Dynamics ERP pricing[3].

Which ERP are we talking about ?

Later this fall, Microsoft is planning to deliver two editions of Microsoft Dynamics 365: “Business” for SMBs and “Enterprise” for larger deployments. Each edition has a set of purpose-built applications -- for example, Operations, Sales, and Customer Service.

Business Edition will have the new Project Madeira with Dynamics CRM

Enterprise Edition will have Dynamics AX with Dynamics CRM

Dynamics 365 offers customers the flexibility to grow at their own pace and expand into additional capabilities with ease to run their entire business in the trusted Microsoft cloud.

There are 2 ways to license Dynamics 365 - by application or by personalized role. Role-based licensing is designed to help customers to support their employees in real world enabling them to access functionality across all applications within Dynamics 365[4].

What does it mean for Dynamics GP Customers ?

Just like Dynamics CRM has been offered on premise in addition to online, Dynamics GP will continue to be enhanced and sold to new customers. There are a lot of SaaS offerings around Dynamics GP & CRM – they can breathe easy that they will not be competing with Microsoft.

[1] https://techcrunch.com/2016/07/06/microsoft-gives-frenemy-salesforce-a-shove-with-new-dynamics-365-integrated-cloud-platform/

[2] https://community.dynamics.com/b/msftdynamicsblog/archive/2016/07/06/insights-from-the-engineering-leaders-behind-microsoft-dynamics-365-and-microsoft-appsource

[3] http://www.informationweek.com/cloud/microsoft-dynamics-365-combines-crm-erp/d/d-id/1326188

[4] http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-readies-combined-crm-erp-dynamics-365-cloud-bundle/
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-73228437720368523102016-03-30T04:48:00.000-07:002016-03-30T04:48:12.491-07:00Dynamics GP 2016 New Features and Roadmap
Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 is Coming in May, and Microsoft has started the background work around educating us about the new features, and the upgrade process.

Dynamics GP 2016 Feature of the Day: Sales All In One Document Viewer

Dynamics GP 2016 Feature of the Day: Web Client Search

Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 Feature of the Day: Web Client

Follow the new features here - https://community.dynamics.com/gp/b/gpteamblog

The upgrade series of posts will be out on the Dynamics GP Support and Services Blog

March 29- Lifecycle for Versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP: How Long Am I Supported?
March 31 - Upgrade Planning for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 – Let’s Get Started! Naturally this is a challenge for Microsoft – keeping the two versions in sync, keeping the agility of pushing out updates online, and keeping the core on premise customers happy. So far Microsoft is doing a good job, barring the complains from some on premise customers that they are often left waiting for a year or more for a new feature when compared with CRM online customers. At the same time the conservative on premise customers are happy that when they get a feature – its been tested by thousands of online customers.

Anyway, to simplify the challenging online vs onpremise feature discussion Microsoft has a feature comparison up now.

CRM 2016 - Online vs on-premises features FAQ

I recommend reviewing the article before proceeding. Below are the online only features

Analytics - Power Query connector streamlines connections to CRM Online

Create a task flow in CRM for phones and tablets (Preview feature)

Share the knowledge base with Parature / Integration with Parature

Use surveys to collect feedback from customers

Email - Dynamics CRM App for Outlook for Exchange Online

Delve (Exchange Online optional for attachments). SharePoint Online license required

I have excluded features like maintaining online instances as there is no point of having them in onpremise. As you can see – the difference is pretty minimal, and the only feature I am actually jealous about as a onpremise customer is Parature integration which is in its infancy right now anyway.
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-28624752079503470552016-03-28T04:38:00.001-07:002016-03-28T04:38:15.367-07:00Dynamics GP 9 to GP 2016 (New features in each version)
The Microsoft Dynamics GP product team has been doing a fantastic job rolling out new incremental releases every year. In an ideal world – most people would try and stay up to date with the most recent release taking advantage of new performance and feature enhancements. However, most people like to wait out a release or two, and sometimes longer when you have a lot of customizations.

Most good partners and consultants normally recommend not staying more than 2 version behind. As long as you are keeping track of the official support lifecycle – you should be okay. Once in a while you run into people with really old installs. Companies who dont invest in IT, and are fine paying more $ in supporting an old version. The 2016 online trials are meanwhile being rolled out by regions.

You can prepare yourself by reviewing the updated documentation on what’s new in CRM 2016

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics/crm-customer-center/what-s-new.aspx

This is a major release for on-premise customers who did not get the CRM 2015 online features, so if you are upgrading from on-premise check out those features as well (CRM Online 2015 Update 1 features now apply to CRM 2016 (on-premises)
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-35792937117801094822015-07-22T21:11:00.001-07:002015-07-22T21:11:30.842-07:00Dynamics GP - Cashbook Bank Management (CBM) vs. Electronic Bank Management (EBM) vs. Bank Reconciliation (BR)
I have been doing a fair bit of explanation around Cashbook Management and Bank Reconciliation modules in GP over the past few weeks. I found the explanation from Brian Wick below was pretty good. To add on to his excellent explanation – here are a few additional items -

Cashbook Management -

Cashbook has support for more Multicurrency transactions. They can do bank transfers in as many as four currencies at the same time for instance whereas Bank Rec allows just two

Easier to track Tax with Bank Transactions (However, you should typically be using AR/AP modules in GP and let tax flow from there) . I’ve heard the argument from some customers that they have been told that this is the only way to track tax when accounting for GST or VAT. That is NOT correct!

Support for more transaction types such as GL Checks and RM Checks with don't really have a counterpart in the Ban Rec product

No eConnect Import Interface

Bank Reconciliation

More commonly Used, better and easier to support

Works well and meets most requirements other than the 4 currency bank transfer requirement discussed above.

Has eConnect Import Interface

Cashbook Bank Management (CBM) vs. Electronic Bank Management (EBM) vs. Bank Reconciliation (BR)

(Bank Management (BM) refers to both CBM and EBM)

The major difference between Bank Management and the Bank Reconciliation is that the Bank Reconciliation receives most of it transactions from other modules. Debtors and creditors cash transactions are captured in RM and PM and Bank Reconciliation is updated accordingly.

You can capture all your cash transactions in Bank Management and RM, PM and GL will be updated accordingly. The windows updated in Great Plains are RM Cash Receipts, RM Transaction Entry (payments to debtors), PM Manual Payments, PM Transaction Entry (receipts from creditors) and GL General Entry.

However in the CBM transactions captured in PM transaction entry, RM transaction entry, SOP, invoicing and PM computer cheques also update CBM in the same way that Bank Reconciliation is updated.

The reconcile functions in CBM and Bank Reconciliation are very similar so the major difference between CBM and Bank Reconciliation is that Bank Reconciliation receives transactions from other modules and Bank Management is a single point of entry for all cash transactions. All other differences are in functionality: Batch processing, full multicurrency, Electronic Reconcile Management (Auto Bank Recon), Intercompany Payments and Deposits, Intercompany many to many Bank Transfers, Payments to Debtors and Receipts to Creditors ext.

The difference between the CBM/Bank Reconcile and EBM is due to the fact that in EBM you do not have any source documents (Cheque counterfoils, Deposit slips ext.) as 90% of the transactions are done via electronic transfer. So the first time we find out about a transaction is when it appears on the bank statement.

In CBM and Bank Reconciliation we capture our transactions from source documents (Cheque counterfoils and deposit slips) and then reconcile the transactions that are on the bank statement to the transactions that we have already captured.

In EBM we capture our transactions from the bank statement and then post the transactions to RM, PM and GL. As the source document is the bank statement there is no need to do a separate reconcile so the post and the reconcile is one process.

In EBM we do however allow for transaction that originate form counterfoils and deposit slips. When this happens the user will capture these transactions in RM and PM but instead of posting to the Bank Account the transactions will post to a Holding account. When the transactions appear on the Bank Statement they will be captured as normal and then matched to the original transactions in the Holding Account. Regardless of the type of the transaction (GL, AP or AR) EBM will create GL transactions moving the money from the Holding account to the Bank Account. Thus the Bank Account will only be affected by transactions that have appeared on a bank statement. By doing this the Bank Account will always have a true balance.

So the difference between CBM/Bank Reconcile and EBM is that CBM/Bank Reconcile are driven by source documents and EBM is driven by the Bank Statement.

Best regards,
Brian Wick
Partner Online Technical Community Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-22743441359426227612015-04-08T00:12:00.001-07:002015-04-08T00:12:29.042-07:00Kinect 2 Tutorial on Tracking Strategies

Microsoft has published a set of great tutorials for making applications with Kinect 2. http://kinect.github.io/tutorial/ These detailed hands on Lab/Tutorials for V2 were published last month.

I highly recommend the tutorial on tracking strategies - for keeping the application accurate when multiple people are in the room.

http://kinect.github.io/tutorial/lab14/index.html

This lab will explain the following:

Tracking a user who is the first to be seen.
Tracking the user who is the closest to the Kinect 2.
Tracking a user who is the most active in the scene.
Tracking several people simultaneously.
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-71518214741502797162015-04-06T21:13:00.001-07:002015-04-06T21:13:53.512-07:00Microsoft Virtual Conference Sessions–May 14 & 15
As part of the MVP Virtual Conference – there are a range of sessions from Azure, to BI that you can attend for free. Register here - http://mvp.microsoft.com/en-us/virtualconference-sessions.aspx

Here are some I am keen on attending -

Detecting Facial Expressions with Azure Machine Learning and Kinect for Windows

Speaker: Dwight Goins

Moderator: Gian Paolo Santopaolo

This session is about learning how to use Microsoft Azure Machine Learning with the Kinect for Windows in order to detect Facial expressions. This session will cover an introduction to Machine Learning, and different algorithms used to detect data patterns. The algorithms discussed will be nearest neighbor, probabilistic learning, decision trees, and neural networks. It will also cover an introduction to the Kinect for Windows device, such as explaining the features and capabilities of the device and SDK. The session will show basic demos and data coming from the device. The session will then drill down into HD Face and describe the data which is generated from Face and HD Face tracking. Lastly the session will show a demo and provide steps on how to incorporate Azure Machine Learning features into a Windows 8.1 Kinect enabled application to detect facial expressions in real time.

Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Automation with PowerShell

Speaker: Trevor Sullivan

Moderator: Anil Desai

Many IT Pros in the industry have begun their virtualization training with VMware, but as the market shifts in other directions, a lot of administrators are finding themselves managing multi-hypervisor environments. Many businesses are now in the process of migrating some or all of their virtual workloads to the Microsoft Hyper-V platform for a number of reasons including, cost savings, scalability, and ease of management. While managing a Hyper-V cluster is somewhat similar in concept to ESXi, there are some fundamental differences. This session will cover Hyper-V clustering, management differences, and the migration of VMs from ESXi to Hyper-V. The entire session will be geared towards VMware administrators who are looking to broaden their horizons by adding Hyper-V know-how to their toolbox.

10 New Things for Developers on Windows 10

Speaker: Colin Melia

Moderator: Mark Schramm

It's in the title. If you didn't have time for Build or you just want to get a summary of 10 new features for developers from the new and/or updates APIs, tools SKUs and/or languages, from devices to the cloud, this is your chance to get on board.

Resolving Conflicts in Collaborative Occasionally Connected Mobile Apps

Speaker: Michael Perry

Moderator: Bryan Hunter

In collaborative apps, a change made on one device appears on another. Data flows seamlessly across devices. But those devices aren't always connected. And even when they are, users don't want to wait for a network connection before they can see or work with their data. So data needs to be stored locally, and synchronized in the background.
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-25592284125278614432015-03-30T21:06:00.001-07:002015-03-30T21:06:13.674-07:00GP 2015 R2–What’s coming and GP’s roadmap

Unfortunately, the documentation can be a little hard to find. The important thing to remember is that as this is a part of the web client – that is where you will find the relevant documentation.

Paul Haag at InterDyn has just written a great post summarizing the steps he followed. Using the Dynamics GP Service Based Architecture (Paul Haag)

Additionally as you are stuck(and its okay if you are, this is Version 1 of the SBA) – you might find the following notes and resources helpful.

There are three logs you can look to for information on requests that fail, the GP Service log, Dexterity Service Log and the Request Log. All logs are located in ProgramData\Microsoft Dynamics\GPSvc\Logs. The Dexterity Service log will tell you if the request made it to the Dexterity instance and is in the Inst_DefaultInstance\DexterityService directory. All requests tie together with a correlation ID. We also add a Service Procedure Metadata property which contains the relevant information for the GP Service to wire the procedure calls up to their URI endpoints. In addition to this, the procedure’s class definition will now contain a third invoke method which the service uses for parsing the request and building up the response. Now The GP 2015 Virtual Machine is available in the MSDN Azure gallery, so you can start doing the same magic with the latest version of GP. If you need help with this, feel free to add a comment or shoot an email and I will put up a short video tutorial.

Read the post from Errol - Announcing, Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 image available in the MSDN Azure gallery.

Do you need to access a Microsoft Dynamics GP web client installation for a quick test or demo? However, just like any revolutionary technology – the key is how it would fit in the real world. James Ashley, a Kinect MVP has a great post with 21 ideas around Hololens

Here are my favorites from his list.

Education

While cool visuals will make education more interesting, the biggest benefit of HoloLens for education is simple access. Children in rural areas in the US have to travel long distances to achieve a decent education. Around the world, the problem of rural education is even worse. What if educators could be brought to the children instead? This is one of the stated goals of Facebook’s purchase of Oculus Rift and HoloLens can do the same job just as well and probably better.

Shopping

Amazon made one click shopping make sense. Shopping and the psychology of shopping changes when we make it more convenient, effectively turning instant gratification into a marketing strategy. Using HoloLens AR, we can remodel a room with virtual furniture and then purchase all the pieces on an interactive menu floating in the air in front of us when we find the configuration we want. We can try and buy virtual clothes. With a wave of the hand we can stock our pantry, stock our refrigerator … wait, come to think of it, with decent AR, do we even need furniture or clothes anymore?

Medical Care

Technology can be used for interesting diagnostic and rehabilitation functions. The depth sensors that come with HoloLens will no doubt be used in these ways eventually. But like education, one of the great problems in medical care right now is access. If we can’t bring the patient to the doctor, let’s bring the GP to the patient and do regular check ups.
Jivtesh Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09314498953058276237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-268736241887032504.post-19878006621634239012015-01-22T20:12:00.000-08:002015-01-22T20:12:00.031-08:00Dynamics GP 2015 - Workflow 2.0 Video
There’s an excellent new video on GP 2015 Workflow now out.
